look for the vtec cylinoid by the distributor.
I need some info on civic engines...5th gen to be more precise. I know that engines with spark plugs situated near the rear of the valve cover are sohc non VTEC 1.5 and front located plugs are sohc VTEC 1.6 . How about 6th gen civic engines? From what I've seen they all have the plugs near the front. Are they all VTEC? I'm not familiar with 6th gen since my civics are both 5th gen. I'll be going to a free parts days at a junk yard soon and I'm looking for a possible mini-me donor engine. THX

The '96-'97's 1.6 came with VTEC as before and without it for the base engine, you can tell by the lack of a VTEC solenoid, VTEC Pressure switch and the centered throttle bore on the intake manifold pointed up, very odd looking thing.

Another way to find out is check the left front side of the block for the engine code.
Dont they have VTEC on the valve cover as well?

my 93 didn't have it on there it just said honda and 16 valve and it's an Si
the '93 didn't come badged on the valve cover like the 94 and up sol's. Just something stupid Honda did in the very begining Robert.
If your out boneing for parts look for the plugs placed towards the rear. Newer motors. The VTEC silonoid is unmistakeable. look at any VTEC motor at the silonoid it's the same for any VTEC equpiped honda or acura. Once you know and can identify that silonoid, you can tell the diffrence between non and vtec equiped motors. Like I said before though, earlier models didn't come with badaging on the valve cover. So do the research on the VTEC silonoid, it will help you down the road. good luck
